Location
Istanbul straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus. Cruise ships dock at Galataport in Karaköy — a modern terminal right on the waterfront, within walking distance of Galata and a short tram ride from the old city (Sultanahmet).
How to Arrive
- Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 40 km from Galataport on the European side.
- Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, farther out.
- From Galataport the T1 tram (via Tophane/Karaköy) reaches Sultanahmet in minutes; taxis and the metro are also close.
Cruise Terminal & Getting Around
- Galataport is an “underground” terminal with shops, cafés and customs right on the quay — you step off almost into the city.
- Get an İstanbulkart for trams, metro, ferries and buses.
- Bosphorus ferries are a scenic and cheap way to cross between continents.
What to See
- Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque facing each other in Sultanahmet.
- Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern.
- The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar.
- Galata Tower and the lively streets of Beyoğlu / İstiklal.
- A Bosphorus cruise past palaces and waterfront mansions.
Shopping & Food
The Grand Bazaar (over 4,000 shops) is the classic experience — carpets, ceramics, jewellery and spices, with bargaining expected. Try Turkish breakfast, kebabs, baklava and çay (tea); a Turkish coffee in Karaköy is a must.
Local Tips
- Dress modestly for mosques (shoulders/knees covered; headscarf for women) and remove shoes.
- Currency is the Turkish lira; emergency number 112.
- Agree the price or insist on the meter before taking a taxi.
