Location

Civitavecchia is the main cruise port serving Rome, roughly 80 km northwest of the city. Most passengers head straight into Rome, but the town itself has a Michelangelo-designed fort and a pleasant seafront.

How to Arrive

  • Rome Fiumicino (FCO) airport is about 70 km away; Ciampino (CIA) is a little farther.
  • Train is the most economical route to Rome: regional and express services run from Civitavecchia station to Roma Termini and Roma San Pietro in 40–80 minutes.
  • Many lines and local operators run direct cruise-port shuttles to central Rome.

Cruise Terminal & Getting Around

  • The port has several berths; a free or low-cost shuttle usually links the ship to the port gate (Largo della Pace), as the terminals can be a long walk from the exit.
  • From the port gate it is about a 10–15 minute walk to the train station, or a short taxi ride.

What to See

A day trip to Rome typically covers the Colosseum and Roman Forum, Vatican City (St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel), the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps. Given the distance, booking a guided excursion or pre-arranged transfer helps make the most of a port day.

Shopping & Food

In town, Corso Centocelle is the main shopping street. For food, look for Roman classics — cacio e pepe, carbonara and supplì — and the catch of the day along the waterfront.

Local Tips

  • Rome is far enough that you should allow a generous buffer to return to the ship.
  • Currency is the Euro; emergency number 112.
  • Validate regional train tickets before boarding to avoid fines.
