Location
Lisbon sits on the north bank of the River Tagus, close to the Atlantic. The main Lisbon Cruise Terminal (Santa Apolónia / Jardim do Tabaco) is on the edge of the historic Alfama district, within walking distance of the centre.
How to Arrive
- Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is only about 8 km from the terminal — roughly 15–20 minutes by taxi.
- The metro and the Aerobus also link the airport with the city.
Cruise Terminal & Getting Around
- The modern cruise terminal has taxis, tourist info and easy access to the riverside.
- Lisbon’s trams (notably the historic Tram 28), funiculars and the metro make the hills manageable.
- The centre is walkable but steep — comfortable shoes recommended.
What to See
- Belém — the Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.
- São Jorge Castle above the Alfama, with sweeping city views.
- Alfama — the oldest quarter, home of Fado music.
- Praça do Comércio and the Baixa grid down to the river.
- A side trip to the palaces of Sintra (about 40 minutes away).
Shopping & Food
The Baixa and Chiado are the main shopping areas; the Time Out Market gathers top food vendors under one roof. Don’t leave without a pastel de nata (custard tart), best near the original bakery in Belém.
Local Tips
- Try an original pastel de nata warm, dusted with cinnamon.
- Currency is the Euro; emergency number 112.
- Watch your footing on the calçada — the decorative but slippery cobblestones.
