Location
Santorini is a crescent-shaped volcanic island in the Aegean. Cruise ships anchor in the caldera and bring passengers ashore by tender to the Old Port (Skala) below Fira — there is no deep-water berth for large ships.
How to Arrive
- Santorini (Thira) Airport (JTR) is about 6 km from Fira for those joining or leaving a cruise here.
- Most visitors arrive by ship; tenders land at the Old Port of Fira.
Cruise Terminal & Getting Around
From the Old Port you reach Fira three ways:
- Cable car — the quickest and most comfortable (expect queues at peak times).
- Donkey/mule path — the traditional zig-zag climb (consider animal-welfare concerns).
- On foot — up the same switchback steps.
From Fira, buses and taxis reach Oia, Pyrgos and the beaches. Taxis are limited, so pre-booked transfers or tours are wise on a busy port day.
What to See
- Oia — the postcard village famous for its sunset, blue domes and windmills.
- Fira — the clifftop capital with caldera-view cafés.
- Red Beach and Perissa/Kamari black-sand beaches.
- Ancient Akrotiri, a Bronze Age settlement buried by eruption.
Shopping & Food
Local wine (the Assyrtiko grape), cherry tomatoes, fava and caper leaves are island specialities. Boutiques in Fira and Oia sell jewellery, art and ceramics.
Local Tips
- It’s a tender port — allow time for tender and cable-car queues before all-aboard.
- Currency is the Euro; emergency number 112.
- The caldera paths are steep and sunny; wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
